Goals & Reflections
My Reflections
Overall, I have gained troves of invaluable knowledge throughout my spring semester. The core principle I have learned throughout my experience with the help of BCOM is that communication is much more of an art than a science. While we read textbooks and listen to lectures to become aware of the fundamentals, you truly manifest value once you put knowledge into practice. I am fortunate to have had this opportunity to practice in my business communication class and outside experiences, like my current place of employment and the Investment Management Club at The University of Texas at Dallas.
Although the class may be over, the communication journey continues. I am confident that I have equipped myself with and mastered the fundamentals, and I will continue to reflect and improve my writing and speaking. Communication is a constant cycle of implementation and reflection, as BCOM has taught me. Seeking out criticism and feedback and realizing the room for continual improvement are thoughts that used to seem burdening but now excite me.
Whether it be my next presentation at work, a stock analysis article, or a weekly newsletter, I am confident in the professional skills I have learned through lecture and practice, and I look forward to the challenges I will face in the future that will continue to refine me as a writer and speaker.
Feedback & Criticism
Business communication has taught me the value of giving and receiving feedback. I used to ask for feedback sparingly, but the class has taught me that getting an outsider's perspective is the most effective way to find mistakes and improve. Now with technology like Quinncia, it's simple to get outside feedback. However, I will continue to ask for multiple perspectives on whatever I write in the future. Out of all the skills I have learned this semester, getting feedback and seeking out criticism is the most underrated and powerful. No matter how low you start, if you continually engage with others to find your weaknesses, fix them, and repeat this process, you will reach heights you never thought existed. That is something I look forward to.
My Goals
I have several business communication goals for the future. I want to continue to upgrade my speaking and writing skills and produce writing and speak for another professional organization. Specifically, I want to develop my skills further in answering audience questions after presentations, creating even more effective presentations, making more concise writing, and enhancing the eloquence and content of my speech. Another goal I have is to compete and win first place in a competition involving writing and speaking.
Regarding my career, my goal for this summer is to apply and be accepted as an intern as an investment banking analyst or a private equity intern. In the mean time, I will continue to hone my industry skills, as well as writing and speaking skills, to achieve this objective.
I am excited at how much room I have to grow. I look forward to facing these challenges and achieving my goals to become a better communicator and provide the utmost efficiency and value for all future organizations I am involved in.
